We do not make a material collection yet, so we want to ask you not to offer and wear things like blankets, clothes, food, etc. yet. The reason is that it is logistically much more demanding than quickly buying specific items from the funds collected, which respond exactly to the identified needs of people in need. However, we will keep you informed as soon as it is up to date. Thank you for understanding.
The military conflict in our neighboring country has been the biggest security threat in Europe since World War II. Civilian casualties are reported, large cities are leaving thousands to save lives.
We are now focusing primarily on helping on the Slovak-Ukrainian border. The first people fleeing the armed conflict in Ukraine already came to Slovak territory, mainly women and children. We are therefore currently focusing on assistance at the Ukrainian-Slovak border. We are also ready to lend a helping hand to the Ukrainians who will find their temporary home in Slovakia.
The situation in Ukraine remains chaotic and dangerous. Together with colleagues from our sister organization People in Need we monitor developing situation. PIN team in Ukraine is assessing situation and we are waiting for what the next hours will bring. As soon as the situation allows, we are ready to help people on the spot. It will be important to provide them with food, drinking water, medicines, safe accommodation but also psychological support.
We have been helping in Ukraine for a long time. After the tragic events in Kiev’s Maidan in February 2014, we were the first in Slovakia to announce a collection to help Ukraine. First, we worked with the renowned movement of Ukrainian doctors and volunteers Narodnyj gospital, which set up field hospitals and provided medical care. Already in March 2014, the collection financed medical supplies and materials for people injured during the Maidan events. In cooperation with the Ukrainian organization SOS Vostok, we also helped to evacuate people from combat zones, but also to provide legal, medical and social support to displaced people.
Later, we made sure that the old people living alone in the deserted villages could survive the winter in the warm environment. We repaired houses damaged after the fighting. We helped children and parents deal with psychological traumas from the conflict. We made sure that hospitals, schools and nursing homes near the contact line had a constant supply of clean water. Before the war we were working to strengthen democratic principles in Ukraine.
The situation in our neighbors affects us all the more.
