Development and Humanitarian Aid

For more than 20 years of our existence, we have operated in more than 25 countries worldwide, including Slovakia. Our organisation was born out of humanitarian aid needed in Kosovo in 1999.

Since then, we have expanded our activities and, besides urgent interventions in critical situations, we also pursue development cooperation and respect for human rights. Thanks to our supporters, we can improve the lives of communities around the world.

Join us and become a member of the Friends of People in Need Club. It is the easiest way to help people in need and give them a chance to lead a more dignified and secure life.

DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION

Development cooperation consists of supporting people trying to lift themselves out of poverty and help them keep growing. Our projects focus on educating women and children in countries with low levels of education, restoring farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and encouraging people to participate more actively in public life.

Our development projects are often built on humanitarian activities to prevent future crises and mitigate the negative consequences. We choose the places of operation very carefully according to local residents’ needs. In pursuance of our development projects, we subsequently contribute to improving the quality of life of local people by implementing long-term and systematic solutions, which will remain sustainable even after we leave.

HUMANITARIAN AID

Humanitarian aid was at the origin of People in Need. Back then, a group of journalists led by Andrej Bán decided to intervene and help people who had to leave their homes in the late 90s due to the war conflict in Kosovo.

We continue their legacy to this day and help those who need urgent help, whether they are people robbed of their homes and livelihoods by natural disasters or people fleeing from armed conflicts.

For more than 20 years, we have helped during humanitarian crises in almost 20 countries worldwide, including Slovakia and the neighbouring Czech Republic. However, our goal is to save human lives and ease their plight and encourage victims of disasters to get back on their feet.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Development cooperation consists of supporting people trying to lift themselves out of poverty and help them keep growing. Our projects focus on educating women and children in countries with low levels of education, restoring farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and encouraging more active participation of people in public life.

Since its foundation, our organisation has been interested in human rights both globally and in Slovakia. Worldwide, we mainly observe what is happening in regions with similar historical experiences. Today, we are primarily monitoring the situation in Cuba, but in the past, it was Belarus, North Korea, China, and the countries of the former Soviet Union.

However, unlike most organisations, we do not focus on global monitoring of human rights violations. Yet, through individual projects, we try to enhance respect for human rights and freedoms and raise awareness of them at home. In Slovakia, in pursuance of human rights protection, we mainly follow topics like racism, discrimination, intolerance, human trafficking, minority rights, and extremism. Since 2000, we have organised a documentary film festival about human rights called One World (Jeden svet).
